Bonus points for Diderot's generous characterizations of the complexities of gender roles waaay before there was any modern idea such as lesbianism...and that ending...oh that ending! I would definitely love to see what he could do with this material.

Yes, the ending does feel a bit rushed, and at times, the prose does get a bit dense.

However, throughout reading this, I more and more felt like I understand what the author was going for, but I'm still not really really sure and into it.I think this book kind of helped me to "get" 18th century literature a bit more. And, lets face it, nobody does naughty lThis went down in one sitting: less a tribute to the literary merits of this novel and more an expose of my coarse, voyeuristic nature.
